ALL STAR GAMES

The All Star Game is played at mid-season each year. Before the A.P.B.A.L. split into two divisions this contest pitted the teams in the upper half of the standings at the half way mark against the teams at the bottom of the standings. The game now matches the all stars from the Wasatch and Oquirrh Divisions.

Game sites were chosen at random until 1980. Beginning that year the site was selected by news worthiness at the time of the contest. Year by year locations and results:

ALL STAR GAME HIGHLIGHTS SINCE 1980

1980 Tehran, Iran

The first All Star Game to be played at a newsworthy location, the Second Division won when Hank Aaron's two run homer in the 7th broke a scoreless tie. The players were then expelled from the country, although there were no Yankees to go home.

1980U Spirit Lake Lodge, Wash.

The game, played at the foot of Mount Saint Helens, resulted in an explosive 7-5 win for the Second Division, their 6th straight victory.

1981 Bogota, Columbia

The First Division won 11-5 in the last All Star Game to be played before the A.P.B.A.L. split into two divisions. Drug runners were rumored to have attended the event.

1982 Gdansk, Poland

The Wasatch Division won the first intra-divisional mid season All Star contest before a huge crowd of Polish strikers.

1983 Port Stanley, Falkland Islands

Gary Carter hit a two run homer in the bottom of the 9th off Joe Sambito for a 6-4 win as the contest was played before British and Argentine troops.

1984 Beirut, Lebanon

Gary Carter drove in the winning run with a pinch hit single in the bottom of the 9th inning.

1985 Bhopal, India

Playing despite gas leaks, Bob Horner's two run double in the 5th gave the Oquirrh Division a lead they never relinquished.

1986 Mexico City, Mexico

The thinner air of Mexico City resulted in five homeruns as the players and fans ignored threats of further earthquakes.

1987 San Juan, Puerto Rico

John Tudor and George Brett were named co-MVPs.

1988 Marion, Utah

Roger Clemens won a free swinging affair with lots of fireworks in a contest that was well attended by local law enforcement officials.

1989 Lockerbie, Scotland

A small crowd attended the game as there seemed to be a general uneasiness expressed by U.S. fans when the topic of flying to Locherbie was brought up. The Oquirrh Division battled back from a 6-0 deficit to tie the contest in the 8th inning and the two divisions then went into the 12th before the Wasatch Division prevailed. Mark McGwire was the MVP with 2 homers and 5 RBI.

1990 Berlin, Germany

The game was played at a site near the recently destroyed wall separating East and West Berlin. The Oquirrh Division ended a six year losing streak.

1991 Kuwait City, Kuwait

The game was played before troops deployed against Kuwait City just three weeks before the war with Iraq broke out. Mike Scioscia had a homerun and 4 RBI for the victors.

1992 Moscow, Russia

Mikhail Gorbachev was to throw out the first ball, but at the last moment he was replaced by Boris Yeltsin.

1993 Mogadishu, Somalia

Hot dogs and cracker jacks were passed out to the crowd of refugees by Marine ushers as Cal Ripken's three run homer in the 7th inning broke open a tight contest.

1994 Lancaster, Pa.

The players turned out in 1960 uniforms as the game was played at the home of APBA. Felix Jose's two run homer in the 4th inning gave the Wasatch Division a 2-1 victory.

1995 Canton, Ohio

Oquirrh pitchers tossed a shutout in a slow news year.

1996 Los Angeles, Ca.

Republican Representative Enid Waldholtz threw out the first ball to O.J. Simpson. Later Simpson denied being at the game and indicated that his hand was too large to fit the alleged catcher's glove. Through her tears, Enid admitted to throwing the first pitch, but said her husband Joe had made her do it. Frank Thomas hit a pair of homeruns.

1997 Lima, Peru

The mid season classic was played for the benefit of the hostages.

1998 Hong Kong, China

The powerful Wasatch Division trounced their Oquirrh Division counterparts before representatives of the People's Republic of China and the British royal family. A moment of silence was held for Princess Diana.

1999 Washington, D.C.

The All Star game was played in Washington, D.C. Guided tours of the oval office were conducted by a bevy of female interns and complimentary cigars were handed out to the players by a smiling President Clinton. The Oquirrh Division won the contest 5-4 on a pinch hit homerun by Paul O'Neil in the 6th inning.

2000 Salt Lake City, Utah

Citing lingering concerns over Y2K, the league managers decided to play it safe and not travel out of the state. Senator Bob Bennett threw out the first ball.

2001 Cade County, Florida

Tiger Woods threw out the first ball. The Oquirrh Division appeared to win the contest, but Al Gore demanded a recount. The Wasatch Division blamed its loss on pitchers "who couldn't throw hard enough to dimple a chad".

2002 New York City, New York

The game was played in a space cleared amid the wreckage of the World Trade Center and the game was dedicated to all those affected by the events of 9-11.

2003 Salt Lake City, Utah

The league strenuously rejected playing the All Star Game in Iraq or North Korea and played in Utah to commemorate the Winter Olympics.

2004 Tikrit, Iraq

With Saddam Hussein locked away, the troops and the local populace watched an exciting game won on David Bell's 2 run homer in the 7th.

2005 Shri Lanka

Played far inland on the island nation of Shri Lanka and expecting tsunami like offensive results, the crows had to settle for a pitchers duel won on Varitek's 2 run HR in the 8th.

2006 New Orleans, La.

Water on the field stifled offensive production as the Wasatch Division won 3-1

2007 Kansas City, Mo.

The game was played in honor of recently deceased Buck O'Neil of the Kansas City Monarchs.

2008 Islamabad, Pakistan

The game was played in memorial of assasinated Benazir Bhutoo as a site in the U.S. was shunned due to the Congressional steroid investigation.

2009 New York, NY

Played on Wall Street with greatly reduced ticket prices, President Obama threw out the first ball (which turned out to be the only 66 rolled in the game).

2010 Isleworth, FL

Tiger Woods threw out the first ball while constantly glancing over his shoulder.  The 21 total runs scored was an All Star record.
